This year from December 1st – December 24th we will be offering 25% off our selected 12 Books of Christmas! We’ve chosen 12 of the best books of the year to highlight:
As always we like to find a fun and interesting way to showcase these books, this year we’ve added the cover images to a tree we painted on the front window. When I say “we painted” I mean that our lovely neighbour Heather at Lulu & Lavigne painted it & I assisted. She did a great job!!
We hope to see everyone over the holiday season but if we don’t see you we hope you have a great holiday & wish you the best in the new year!
Epic Books is pleased to welcome local storyteller Lisa Pijuan-Nomura for Friday Morning Stories! Lisa will share some of her favourite books, songs & poems for children of all ages. We hope that you will join us Friday mornings @ 10:30, Epic Books 226 Locke St. S.
We have been looking for the perfect way to introduce a permanent story-time to the store and couldn’t be more excited to have Lisa come in & host! Knowing Lisa we are going to have all kinds of fun!!
Our very first Friday Morning Stories is scheduled for Friday, May 31st and we very much hope to see you there!!

gritLIT 2013 is coming up next weekend and we couldn’t be more excited. This year’s line-up is absolutely phenomenal with so many wonderful authors I couldn’t possibly list them here. So I will refer you to their website: gritlit.ca for all of the details.
Of course, we did want to mention that we have tickets for all of the events and workshops as well as weekend passes and gritLIT memberships available for sale in the store. Also, as a side-note the book club that I’m a part of has had a wonderful time attending events together as a group. This year we’ve decided to skip our meeting for the month and meet up at a couple of the readings for an evening out. So when you’re looking for fun book club events gritLIT is a great choice!
We really can’t say enough good things about this festival, it’s always a great time and does a really wonderful job of celebrating Hamilton’s local literary culture. Not only does gritLIT include local and international authors but they also highlight the local arts community by featuring a different artist each year on all of the festival materials. This year the image used is by local artist Julia Veenstra and is really stunning.
It’s a rainy Saturday here today and after the cold winter weather this week it’s made me think that spring really is on the way! I love spring so this is exciting but not so great because it means spring cleaning. So in an effort to make my life a little bit easier (selfish I know) I thought maybe we should have a…
Spring Cleaning Sale!!!
There is tons of great stuff on sale, really too much to list here, so please come by the store and take a peek. The sale stickers for 20% off, 25% off & even some of the 30% offs have been pulled out and put into action!
We’re not much for fine print so here it is: If it has a sticker it’s on sale until Sunday, March 3rd.
The debates for Canada Reads 2013 will take place on February 11th – 14th; personally I always try my best to get all of the books read prior so I can argue along…in the store, of course. So don’t be alarmed if you happen to wander past and witness me yelling at an empty store, it’s all part of the wonder that is Canada Reads.
Anyways, the panel and book selections have been announced, you can check out the Canada Reads homepage for all kinds of interviews and excerpts. I just wanted to let everyone know that we have all 5 books in stock and (hint, hint) any one would make a wonderful gift. So without further ado here’s the list:
Away by Jane Urquhart defended by Charlotte Gray
The Age of Hope by David Bergen defended by Ron MacLean
Two Solitudes by Hugh MacLennan defended by Jay Baruchel
February by Lisa Moore defended by Trent McClellan
Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese defended by Carol Huynh
Of course for those of you that prefer the visual here they are:
Well we’ve finally managed to pick the 22 books that will be a part of our 25 Days of December promotion. We did have a really difficult time choosing so hopefully we’ve managed to include something for everyone on your list this year!! I braved my fear of heights this morning and posted up the book covers for the big reveal. So without further ado….
Of course, since I’m a horrible photographer I’ve also made up a “fabricated” calendar.
As you’ll notice the 23rd and 24th are blank since all of the promoted titles will be 25% of on those days. Just as a reminder, here are the rules.
Happy Holidays everyone!! This year to celebrate the season we thought we would try something different. We’ve come up with, what we think is, a pretty fun promotion. For the month of December we will be picking a different book every day to put on sale with our 25 Days of December sale. Now we are aware that technically there are only 24 shopping days in the month, but the 25th is pretty important so we thought we should include it. Plus 25% off a different book every day sounds better than 24.
So hopefully that helps to explain the giant calendar currently painted on our front window…
Giving credit where credit is due by the way, I should really mention that Heather next door at Lulu & Lavigne (luluandlavigne.com) painted this entire window. I lack even the most basic creative talent; when I mentioned the idea to her she volunteered to help and spent her day off doing it! I cannot thank her enough.
So we have a giant calendar on the front window. It’s looking a little bit bare but sometime in the next week or 2 it’ll be full of wonderful books. It’s just that there are so many great titles it’s tricky to choose!!
We promise to keep you posted. In the meantime here are all of the promotional details.
The holidays are coming and, as always, we like to do something special at the beginning of the season to have some fun with our wonderful customers. This year we are very excited to be working with other merchants on the street to plan Christmas on Locke! An all day event (10-4) with children’s activities, a bake sale and a concert being held at Fenian Films (211 Locke Street South); outside along the street there will be carollers, Mr & Mrs Claus and horse & buggy rides.
Getting the festivities started will be Lynne Kittredge-Fox (The Mighty Moon King) who will be joining us there for a reading at 10:30. I can’t think of a more fun way to kick off the day and the holiday season!!
We are pleased to welcome Sarah E. Truman in-store on Friday, November 9th @ 7 p.m. to read from her book Searching For Guan Yin. Ms Truman spent 2 years travelling in China researching Guan Yin and has recently returned to Hamilton to share her experiences with us.
Halloween is almost upon us, in anticipation we will be hosting author Mark Leslie for a spooky evening in celebration of his new book Haunted Hamilton. To kick off the evening Mark will be organizing a fun Zombie approach to the store…
Mark will also be sharing some ghost stories with the crowd and telling some tales from Haunted Hamilton. We are so excited that we’ve broken out our secret stash of the book and popped them right in the front window.
This is our very first Zombie Mob so we hope you’ll be here to share it with us!
